... And a big old 'Howdy' from the Lone Star State

Damiàn, thanks for inviting me to contribute to this blog.

I got a real kick out of your AIIDE presentation (I'll post feedback in a future update) and I'm looking forward to seeing what emerges from this blog.

As I understand it, the blogging process in most parts of the web seems to consist of posting large quantities of random personal information as a cheap and ineffective surrogate for psychotherapy.

And as much as I'm tempted to post electronica music, vegan recipes, obscure yoga techniques, and lurid descriptions of being photographed nude covered in arugula, I think I'm going to skip all that and just talk about games and AI.

Here's the obligatory one-paragraph bio:

I'm currently working with a brilliant and tenacious team of developers known as Retro Studios / Nintendo, where I helped ship a game I'm rather proud of (note that I'm only one of several developers working on AI at Retro). The team is currently hard at work on the sequel, which will be a launch title for the Nintendo Revolution -- a platform so steeped in mystery that its dark secrets are inaccessible even to many of Nintendo's own internal development teams. I've also worked on AI for a few other games I'm proud of, and I've written some articles on game AI for various books on game development.

I'm interested in finding ways to advance the state of the art in the design and engineering of game AI. I want to find better ways to make more interesting characters and more entertaining interactions with those characters.

But mostly I'm interested in making games that are loads of fun, AI or no AI.

I want to make sure the hard-working consumer who pays $49.99 for my game ends up with a smile.

Anything that gets in the way of that smile needs to be killed.
