Minor correction: I don't actually discourage waypoints in all cases as the text of the article seems to suggest. Waypoints are indispensable for a lot of different uses in game AI.
But I do discourage using waypoints for navigation specifically, especially before you've considered some of the alternatives, as per my previous blog post.
