Spatial Queries for Cover and Tactical Positions

Published 5 September 2026 · Create testable candidate generation and scoring for tactical locations.

Choosing a tactical position is often clearer as a query: generate candidates, reject invalid locations, score survivors and return the best acceptable result.

Generate narrowly

Start around the agent, target, objective or leader. A dense global grid wastes time. Use authored points for precision and procedural samples where spaces vary.

Filter before scoring

Reject unreachable, occupied or exposed candidates early. Score distance, line of sight, danger and path cost afterward. Epic’s EQS follows this generator-and-test model.

Normalise and visualise

Display candidates with colour-coded scores and rejection reasons. Save input context so intermittent failures can be replayed.

Account for motion

Reserve scarce cover, validate at arrival and requery on meaningful events. For squads, score separation and role. This relies on reliable navigation.
